The Well Clerkenwell Review

Sunday Roast @ The Well

180 St John Street, Clerkenwell, London EC1V 4JY

Being a little bit Northern (OK midlands but that’s north of Watford Gap so it counts…) I am just a little bit partial to a good Sunday lunch. Now the weather is finally getting a little bit cooler its getting a little easier to persuade friends that a Sunday lunch is the right thing to do (I can eat them all year round) so after a little searching online I found a couple of blogs that recommend the Well in Clerkenwell and as a bonus they accept the Tastecard so I made a booking online and off we went one sunny November Sunday.

Sunday Lunch @ The Well

The Well is just less than a 10 minute walk from Angel or Old Street stations in Clerkenwell (and even closer to Barbican tube) which is refreshingly quiet at the weekend. Both reviews I read recommended booking however on our visit the restaurant/pub was busy enough to have a nice atmosphere but there were a few empty tables, however as booking online was so easy there isn’t much reason not to book. The menu was a fairly standard upper market pub menu with three choices of roast; beef, pork and chicken. Both of us chose the pork which when it arrived looked great although a quick comment from Jess was that there wasn’t much gravy, however within a minute a slide plate with apple sauce, cauliflower cheese and more gravy arrived and all was again well in the world. The roast itself came with really nice roast potatoes (crispy on the outside, soft in the middle as they should be!), a nice cut of pork stuffed with stuffing with some cracking crackling (sorry…), a Yorkshire pudding and various vegetables. The beef also looked really good (spying on other tables), pink in the middle, again like it should be!!

The service was really good throughout with attentive but not overbearing staff and the restaurant has a homely feel about it. The venue looks like it would be really nice in the evening with a very nice looking downstairs.

A really good Sunday roast in a nice quiet part of the city. Good service and with a Tastecard great value means I will certainly be back.

Overall Score: 7.5 (without a Tastecard 7)
