OK after the rather disappointing episode that was Barburrito, next up was Benito’s Hat who now have 6 venues across London. As usual I have an admission to make, I have been to Benito’s Hat on many occasions (mainly the Covent Garden branch) and was actually my first London burrito however this was my first trip to the Farringdon location. Previous visits have always been good without quite being spectacular so how was this visit?
Location & Service
As I mentioned last time up, Barburrito and Benito’s Hat are very similar in terms of decor although Benito’s Hat fortunately has less shouting and the service is always pretty friendly, even during busy periods. This visit was a little later, around 2 in the week so the main crowds had dispersed allowing the service to be, well pretty top notch. You can even have a mixture of meats which I have to say was very tempting but in the interests of a fair test (yes that’s what is was, nothing to do with me being predictable and a little boring, no, honest…) I had my usual…
So pork, cheese, sour cream, mild salsa, refried beans and Mexican rice, a classic! The burrito nice and weighty, nicely packed, not too tight, not too lose. The burrito tastes great, a good solid taste without any one ingredient being over powering and the reasonably generous portion of meat gives great flavour. Nice and juicy without causing too much dripping near the end (though past visits have suffered from that however I do have to take some responsibility for asking for more sour cream…).
The pork burrito costs £6.10 so pretty much the average for such food in London however I think (especially on this visit) Benito’s Hat were quite generous with the fillings and despite always asking for more cheese and sour cream the staff never give me any dirty looks and pile more on which is great! Benito’s Hat also have a loyalty scheme (who doesn’t?!!) with free tortilla chips after 5 burritos and a free burrito after 10, nothing too brilliant however I have taken advantage of this in the past so can’t be too harsh. Drink are pretty standard so overall pretty good here.
So having been many times before I was all ready for a 7 or 7.5 out of 10 however this visit was great and I feel no guilt giving an 8. The service and burrito were great and being in London I doubt I’ll ever give amazing scores for value. I’ll be back Benito’s Hat, especially to see the guys in Farringdon…
